That is why if I want something floral, I normally go for Taiwan green oolongs or tit goon yum. But this tea is a lot more fragrant. However, it is not like those flower tea. where it's starting to develop deeper and more tempered layers to its flavor profile, but it hasn't lost any of its unique nuances.
The roast is nice and balanced - at higher ratios and with longer steep times, it comes out dark amber like zuhuo yancha; while at lower ratios and/or shorter steep times, it has a vibrant, solid gold color reminiscent of medium-roast yancha.
The flavor profile really stands out to me when I use 8 grams of leaf in a 100mL gaiwan. It has a floral quality to it that progressively builds up in the first 2-3 steeps, and then really blossoms and lingers for the remainder of the session, and well into the aftertaste. It's very distinct, and very enjoyable.
I appreciate the back-end of this tea - the leaves hold their composure very well and the flavors don't fall off a cliff. This tea can be pushed without sacrificing the structure of its flavor profile.
The length and depth of the aftertaste is incredible. I love how soft, smooth, and soothing it is, and how persistent it is on the palate. Show Less

in terms of its rich history and deep significance in the world of Fenghuang oolong, but also due to its remarkably expressive nature that is capable of achieving such a complex and multifaceted flavor profile. While there is a common thread that ties all three versions together, they also have a lot going on individually that makes them all worth exploring.
This Song Zhong stands out to me specifically because of the way the flavor profile builds and gradually increases in its complexity with each progressive sip. The way it sits on the palate is sublime, like it lifts off the surface of the tongue and expands across the whole mouth and back of the throat… this is a very powerful tea in terms of how the flavor profile moves, not only across the mouth and palate, but also in the body.
It's also quite a dynamic tea; it’s soft where it needs to be, with some creamy and floral undertones that are persistent through the end of the session, and then sharp where it needs to be as well. It’s got a bright minerality and a complex citrus fruitiness that hits the spot for me, I particularly enjoy the many layers of citrus fruits. There’s a lot going on and it’s clear to me that the processing techniques applied really highlight the intricate nature of old Huangzhi Xiang genetics.
In my opinion, this Song Zhong is amazing when brewed up gong-fu style, while the Huangzhi Xiang Classic is wonderful for Western-style brewing ... which makes it easy to keep both of them in the stash without feeling like they're too similar to each other. And, of course, the Danhu Old Bush is utterly flawless and magnificent beyond belief regardless of how it's brewed up. Show Less

hich were competition grade, one of them allegedly won second place in 2022 at the Chaozhou Tea King Competition, or something like that. Living in the United States makes it difficult to confirm such things, I suppose it comes down to trusting your vendors…
Anyways, Tea Hong’s Orchid Gratus stands out as being right up there with the competition-grade and old-bush Xing Ren that I sampled, both of which are literally two and a half times more expensive per gram. This one has all of the right overlap in all of the correct places, but also carries with it some unique attributes that make this feel like an elevated expression of Xing Ren.
Honestly, I’d rather have Orchid Gratus over the two competition-grade Xing Ren. It’s clear that the active phases of the processing; such as the baking, were executed perfectly, and also the resting phase, where patience is required for the maocha to catch up to the masterful techniques applied to it. This is the real deal, whoever made this tea is exceptionally skilled.
As a result of the expert-level crafting, the flavor profile is exquisite. To me, it tastes like vanilla-bean infused plums and seared pineapple flesh, soaked in apple juice and then caramelized in a pan with herbaceous spices like star anise or fennel seed. As the flavor profile melts away, I’m left with distinct overtones of honey drenched florals that linger in the aftertaste for a long time, along with a pleasant minerality that is characteristic of high-end dancong.
There’s a lot going on, and the soft edges this tea has make for a very pleasant overlap in the flavors that accentuates the whole experience as they mingle with one another. The texture is buttery-smooth and the mouthfeel is exceptionally rich; it brings with it a kind of pungency that creates a very expansive and long-lasting aftertaste with undertones of stewed and spiced apples. The aftertaste has its own complex and unique set of characteristics which sink very deeply into the palate, and make for an unforgettable experience. Show Less

Indeed, besides the mastery in the initial processing, patience and expertise in subsequent baking are critical in the making of any classic style Phoenix oolongs. Any deeper baked oolongs, actually. I am amazed that you are sensitive enough to have deciphered that through tasting. at carries all of the depth you would expect of authentic old tree Mi Lan. The aroma coming off the dry leaf is vibrant and complex, hinting at the marvelous experience that awaits the drinker. I knew this was going to be an incredible experience before I even turned my kettle on.
This one opens up with bright and sweet notes of sun-dried fruits, and a tropical dankness that is reminiscent of mango, guava, peaches, lychee, passionfruit, with a kind of electrical zing to it that reminds me of fresh-cut pineapples. These bright and tangy notes electrify the roof of the mouth and nostrils as they work their way up from the back of the throat.
In every sip, this is a juicy and fruit-forward Mi Lan that is perfectly overlaid on top of a powerful and textured body, which has a woodsy quality to it that reminds me of walking through an old-growth forest on a hot, sunny day.
You can’t miss the cong wei – it’s apparent and focused across the full session; even the washed-up leaves retain that woodsy-spicy-sweet fragrance that is just so attractive because of how well it sits in contrast against the insanely sweet and pungent notes of tropical fruits.
The mouthfeel and texture are incredible – for having such powerful and distinct peaks of flavor, the body is very deep, the edges are very soft, and the individual notes integrate very well with each other, creating a very complex experience in every facet of the tea. The initial sip, the evolution of flavors on the palate, the lingering sweetness, all tell a cohesive story and that story is the life of healthy, old Mi Lan Xiang trees.
The finish is elegant and the sweet aftertaste lingers for a long time, but what I appreciate most about this tea is how deep it sinks into every cell of my body, and how graceful the qi is. This is a tea that stays with me all day.

ust very fond of tea. It really was Milan Xiang, particularly of this quality that totally hooked me to tea. That very night in the mountains in Phoenix, amongst the noise of the local Fenghuang dialect and clinking tableware in a local restaurant with the farmers and producers, I began to question myself, if I could help multinational corporations communicate their brands and products, why couldn't I make such quality better understood? Why would coffee and wine have their social-economic role so widely accepted above and beyond this no less amazing product? Ironically, one of the projects on hand was helping the International Coffee Organisation to promote coffee in China. That was perhaps the point when tea was elevated in my plan from a side business to my full career. It was when we were still using the Nokia phone and film camera, when information was still passed on through the printed pages and I had to use html to create a webpage. That was 25 years ago. After all these years of learning and trading tea from many regions, Milan Xiang still has its very special place in my heart. It is still my dearest tea.
